Step up for NASH with us this Thursday!

International NASH day is dedicated to raising awareness of Non-Alchoholic Steatohepatits (NASH). Held on the second Thursday of June each year, this year the timing is perfect, as TLF is gearing up to launch our What’s My ALT? campaign, which focuses on knowing your ALT score now to prevent liver damage later.

What is NASH?

NASH is a form of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) that occurs when there is an accumulation of fat in the liver, leading to inflammation and damage to liver cells. It is a more severe form of NAFLD and can progress to cirrhosis and liver failure if left untreated. It can be asymptomatic, or it may present with symptoms such as fatigue, abdominal pain, and jaundice. NASH is typically diagnosed through a combination of blood tests, imaging studies, and liver biopsy.

Treatment involves addressing the underlying issues. In some cases, medications may be prescribed to reduce inflammation and prevent liver damage. Prevention involves maintaining a healthy weight, following a healthy diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and limiting alcohol consumption.

How can you keep your liver healthy?

Always seek guidance from your doctor if you have concerns about your liver and take charge of your health to help prevent liver damage or slow the progression of existing conditions. A few simple changes can help improve your liver function. Watch your sugar consumption and swap sugary drinks and deserts for fresh fruit and fruit infused water. Increase your vegetable intake and limit all of those summertime grilled burgers and hotdogs. Cut down on processed food and take-out and get creative in your kitchen. Don’t forget to keep your body moving! If it’s too hot for you to get out and walk or cycle, hop in a pool! Swimming is easier on your joints AND will keep you cool.
